The inspiration behind Stretch was to challenge the natural properties of wood by reshaping it through stretching. Tulin Atamer Karaagac aimed to abstract the material and create a design that responded against its nature. As she explains, "You are not able to stretch wood." This unique concept sets Stretch apart from traditional bench designs.
One of the key features of Stretch is its solid billet wood seating element. By choosing different materials, such as corian, the design gains richness in its production details. The modular nature of Stretch allows it to be used as an independent bench or multiplied side by side and/or perpendicular, providing flexibility in various outdoor settings.
In terms of production, Stretch utilizes a combination of corian and solid billet wood. The billet itself is one piece, which is the defining characteristic of the design. The dimensions of Stretch are as follows: Width: 320cm, Depth: 60cm, Height: 60cm.
Stretch not only offers a unique design, but also functional features. The corian side parts of the bench help to balance the wood and serve as side coffee tables. These side parts also elevate the wooden seating element, providing protection for the wood. The modular design allows for multiple benches to be placed side by side or in a perpendicular arrangement.
The development of Stretch began in January 2015 and was completed in February 2015. During the production process, the main focus was on finding a solid wood billet with the desired size and density of rings. The challenge was to reshape the wood against its natural tendencies and create the impression of stretching. The choice of wood was also crucial, as it needed to be resistant to outdoor elements.
Stretch has received recognition for its innovative design. In 2015, it was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that demonstrate outstanding creativity and resourcefulness, incorporating best practices in art, science, design, and technology. Stretch exemplifies these qualities, contributing to improvements in quality of life and making the world a better place.
Stretch is a testament to Tulin Atamer Karaagac's ability to push the boundaries of design and create a truly unique and functional piece of furniture. With its combination of materials, modular design, and innovative approach to wood, Stretch is a standout addition to any outdoor space.
